L’area ricade all’interno del parco dell’Appia Antica, che si sviluppa per oltre 16 Km attraversando aree archeologiche e naturalistiche di alto valore lungo la Via Appia Antica, definita la “Regina Viarum” e riconosciuta Patrimonio Mondiale UNESCO. Si trova in prossimità del monumento storico “Casal Rotondo” e della stazione di Torricola, che dista solo 9 minuti in treno dalla stazione di Roma Termini.
L’ambito si compone di due aree attualmente dismesse e precedentemente utilizzate come cave per l’estrazione di basalto, ed ospita un antico casale di 200 mq ca. E’ caratterizzato dai caratteri geomorfologici tipici della Campagna Romana ed è prevalentemente destinato a verde.
Il Protocollo d’Intesa, sottoscritto a settembre 2022 tra il Gruppo FS, Roma Capitale, il Parco Archeologico dell’Appia Antica e l’Ente Parco Regionale, punta a valorizzare le aree sotto il profilo ambientale, storico, archeologico e culturale, attraverso il recupero e la riqualificazione dell’ambito delle ex cave e del loro valore testimoniale, prevedendo l’introduzione di attività compatibili con la normativa e le tutele del Piano del Parco (aree verdi e servizi legati al turismo e allo sport, con attività ludico-ricreative, formative e fattorie didattiche), con l’obiettivo di incrementare la fruibilità e l’accessibilità turistica.

The area falls within the Appia Antica Park, which stretches for over 16 km through archaeological and naturalistic areas of high value along the Via Appia Antica, defined as the “Regina Viarum” and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located near the historical monument “Casal Rotondo” and the Torricola station, which is only 9 minutes by train from Roma Termini station.
The area is composed of two areas currently disused and formerly used as quarries for basalt extraction, and hosts an ancient farmhouse of about 200 sq. m. It is characterized by the typical geomorphological features of the Roman countryside and is mainly destined to green areas.
The Memorandum of Understanding, signed in September 2022 between the FS Group, Roma Capitale, the Appia Antica Archaeological Park and the Regional Park Authority, aims to enhance the areas from an environmental, historical, archaeological and cultural point of view, through the recovery and redevelopment of the area of the former quarries and their testimonial value, by providing for the introduction of activities compatible with the regulations and protections of the Park Plan (green areas and services related to tourism and sports, with recreational and educational activities and educational farms), with the aim of increasing usability and tourist accessibility.
