Luino è una cittadina ubicata sulla sponda est del Lago Maggiore non lontano dal confine con la Svizzera e dai centri di Bellinzona e Lugano, con lungolago attrezzato con piccolo porto turistico. I collegamenti ferroviari assicurano relazioni con il Gottardo, e, via Gallarate, con Milano, Novara, Ventimiglia. Tramite le linee di navigazione lacuale si raggiungono agevolmente i principali centri urbani di Locarno, Verbania, Stresa. Le autostrade connettono con Varese, Milano, Genova, Como.

La stazione di Luino nasce nei primi decenni del Novecento come stazione internazionale dotata di scalo dove veniva smistata la merce. La destinazione futura dell’area potrebbe essere legata alla vocazione turistica di Luino, ma anche ai servizi per i cittadini.

Ad agosto 2019 è stato sottoscritto un Protocollo d’intesa per la redazione di un Masterplan e la realizzazione di un parcheggio di interscambio Smart Border, oltre alla valorizzazione dello storico fabbricato viaggiatori. Il comune di Luino punta anche alla ricollocazione degli istituti scolastici superiori che potrebbero beneficiare della accessibilità al trasporto pubblico.

Luino is a town located on the east shore of Lake Maggiore not far from the border with Switzerland and the centre of Bellinzona and Lugano, with lakefront equipped with small marina. The railway connections ensure relations with the Gotthard, and, via Gallarate, with Milan, Novara, Ventimiglia. The main urban centres of Locarno, Verbania and Stresa can be easily reached by boat. The highways connect with Varese, Milan, Genoa, Como.

Luino station was born in the first decades of the Twentieth Century as an international station with a railway yard where goods were sorted. The future destination of the area could be linked to the tourist vocation of Luino, but also to services for citizens.

In August 2019, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed for the drafting of a Masterplan and the construction of a Smart Border interchange parking, in addition to the enhancement of the historic passenger building. The municipality of Luino also aims at the relocation of higher education institutions that could benefit from accessibility to public transport.
